2. Anemia Free Village Campaign

Nutritional Deficiency Anaemia is a significant public health challenge in India. India is among the countries with high prevalence of anaemia. It is widely prevalent in all age groups, being particularly high among the most vulnerable; nearly 52% in pregnant women, 57 % among non-pregnant non-lactating women, 59% among adolescent girls, 31% in adolescent boys and around 67% in children under two years of age.

It has devastating effects on health, physical and mental productivity affecting the quality of life. It poses a major threat to maternal and child survival, and contributes to low birth weight, lowered resistance to infection, poor cognitive development and decreased work productivity. The magnitude of anaemia together with the associated adverse health, development and economic consequences, highlights the need for intensified action to address this public health problem. Prevention and control of anaemia is one of the key strategies for reducing maternal, neonatal and childhood mortality and improving maternal, adolescent and childhood health status.

Food-based strategies (dietary diversification), food supplementation and improvement of health services are required to reduce the burden of anaemia. Growing an Organic Kitchen Garden for Nutrition (OKGN) is a simple, replicable, economically viable and sustainable solution for combating nutritional anaemia. Regular consumption of a diverse mix of vegetables for curing nutritional anaemia is well known and has been scientifically established in many studies. To understand the impact of the Organic Kitchen Garden for Nutrition (OKGN) to address nutritional deficiency anaemia, a correlation study titled ‘Correlation of Organic Kitchen Garden for Nutrition, Awareness of Consumption of Vegetables and Nutritional Deficiency Anaemia’ was conducted by SEVA and implementing and knowledge partner of Anaemia Free India Forum (AFIF), which is a platform of likeminded NGOs who share a common vision and spirit to combat nutritional deficiency anaemia in India, with the support of The Sahayak Trust. The analysis shows a noticeable increase of 1.25gm in the level of Hb after consistent consumption of organically grown vegetables from OKGNs. This is a significant improvement and it was also found that OKGNs are a far more acceptable, sustainable and cost-effective way to combat nutritional deficiency anaemia. As one of Anaemia Free India Forum (AFIF) Partner, we are committed to making 100 villages of  Parbhani District free of Nutritional Deficiency Anaemia through nutrition education and facilitating the development of Organic Kitchen Gardens for Nutrition (OKGN) in different verticals like Schools, Anganwadis, Ashramshalas and SHGs/ Community.
