Project Brick to Ink
Bringing Migrant Children Back to Education
Brick to Ink was an education initiative implemented by SEVA to support children of seasonal migrant families working at brick kilns and mining sites in Thane district. Frequent migration often disrupted children’s education, with many dropping out of school or never enrolling.
SEVA conducted surveys to identify migrant families and out-of-school children, followed by counselling and coordination with brick kiln owners, parents and nearby Zilla Parishad schools. Learning sessions were conducted at brick kiln sites to help children reconnect with education and prepare them for mainstream schooling.
Children were supported with essential educational materials, including school bags, clothes, shoes and water bottles, and were subsequently enrolled or re-enrolled in nearby schools.
The project successfully re-enrolled more than 200 children into school and provided regular learning support. Improvements were also observed in children’s learning abilities, confidence, hygiene practices and interest in education.
Brick to Ink demonstrated that with timely identification, community engagement and educational support, migration need not become a barrier to a child’s right to learn.
